ORQUESTA TIPICA (they typical tango orchestra) is an essential experience for anyone wishing to understand the nuances of tango styles from playing to performing to composition. Musicians will begin by studying and rehearsing in sections during STRINGS, BANDONEON, PIANO/BASS workshops before coming together to play as an orchestra. Repertoire will include playing the original music of "Orquesta Horacio Salgan," "Orquesta Anibal Troilo," and Piazzolla '46. The course concludes with a June 21 showcase which is highly recommended for all players.

Tango's main instruments at its inception were violin, guitar and flute. The strings always occupied an important role, not only melodically but rhythmically. In these workshops participants will understand how to phrase as a string ensemble and how to interpret tango rhythms written in tango scores, which are never expressed as they are actually written! After working as a section, string musicians will proceed to play in "Orquesta Tipica" for a deeper understanding of how the instruments relate and interact in a tango orchestra and across distinct styles of tango.

The bandoneon holds an important role in creating the rhythmical groove. Each orchestra had its style and signature rhythm which defined it. In the Bandoneon Ensemble workshops participants will work with different styles and repertoire which will be played in our "Orquesta Tipica."
Participants will come away understanding how the voicing of the bandoneon and rhythms integrate and interact in the orchestra and in different styles and gain experience by playing alongside faculty in rehearsals and showcases.

Piano and contrabass are the center of the rhythm in the "Orquesta Tipica" with every orchestra's signature rhythm created by these two instruments. In Tango, the piano's left hand and the bass
have to match in every aspect, creating a special 'tango groove' for each style.
Pianists will learn how to accent and how to use the left hand and the bass players will work on matching it with 'arrastres,' 'glissandos' (previous to the accented beat) and 'strapattas.' The workshops will focus on different styles, from Di Sarli and Pugliese to Salgán.

Tango began with gauchos and “the payada,” an improvised rhyme which interacted with the guitar’s rhythmical qualities and musical virtuosity. The guitar has always been present and important in tango, transforming across time from “the payada” and the earliest tangos into electric guitar played in the ensembles of Piazzolla and Salgán. These workshops are taught in progression and focus on tango technique, “the tango groove,” working with singers and recreating a traditional guitar ensemble. Select participants can showcase on June 21st.

Working with repertoire provided ahead of time, these workshops will focus on the idiosyncrasy of Argentine Spanish, the narrative structure of the tangos, articulation and phrasing, the musical communication between singer and accompanist and on transmitting the meaning of the song to the public in performance. This workshop series is a special opportunity to study the main components and technique that form the roots and heart of the tango genre. Select participants can showcase on June 21st along with guitar ensemble.

TANGO COMPOSITION + COMPETITION
Faculty: Leonardo Suarez-Paz
Composers will begin by learning styles on their respective instruments (STRINGS or PIANO) and in ORQUESTA TIPICA. Composition course is divided into 3 parts: 1. Understanding the score and styes.
2. Understanding the bandoneon.
3. Understanding the roles of different instruments in tango. June 21st Showcase is not required but encouraged. Composers will have 3 months to submit their score for entry into the competition.

The winning composition will be performed in June 2027, at the 3rd PIAZZOLLA100 Festival. A video of the performance will be provided to the composer for non commercial purposes.
