PIAZZOLLA100 EVENTS 2026

PIAZZOLLA100 Opening Night will feature excerpts from "The Rites of Love," a new ballet composed by Leonardo Suarez-Paz, performed by 2x Latin Grammy nominated Cuartetango string quartet and choreographed by the "blessedly inventive" (NY Times) choreographer Igal Perry, for New York's Peridance Contemporary Dance Company (PCDC).  

The program will also showcase the PBS featured Cuartetango Music & Dance Co. under the direction of Leonardo Suarez-Paz and featuring Cuartetango string quartet (Leonardo Suarez-Paz, Francisco Salazar, Jon Weber, Danny Miller), Rodolfo Zanetti on bandoneon and tango dancers Guillermo Merlo and Leonardo & Olga Suarez-Paz.

"Un Tal Funes," directed by Raúl de la Torre and released in Argentina in 1993 is based on the novel Háblenme de Funes by Humberto Costantini, a key figure in Argentine literature who wrote much of his work in exile.  

The film recreates a 1930s-era brothel and ballroom and the underground atmosphere of early tango culture. The stellar cast includes Andrea del Boca, Graciela Borges, Gian Maria Volonté, Pepe Soriano, Moria Casán and Nacha Guevara. The ensemble is a showcase of Argentine talents including Jairo, Susana Rinaldi, recording artists Fernando Suarez-Paz & Charly Garcia and tango dancers including Juan Carlos Copes, Maria Nieves, Teresita Brandon among many others.

"Un Tal Funes" (also know as "Funes, Un Gran Amor" and "Obession") did not achieve major international awards, its significance lies in its artistic and literary pedigree, its high-profile cast of actors, tango musicians and dancers both on and off screen and a soundtrack that remains a cult favorite among tangueros and fans of Argentine rock.

Step into the acoustically superior & welcoming space at "La Capilla del Tango," for a unique experience beginning with a film screening of "Un Tal Funes," and followed by a mini tango dance class with Maria Jose Sosa and our special milonga with live music featuring  3MAESTROS - Berraute, Suarez-Paz, & Zanetti - 3 Award-Winning Argentine musicians and masters of tango styles who will perform in the improvisational style known as "La Parrilla."

Closing the PIAZZOLLA100 Festival at  "La Capilla del Tango," will feature live music by festial artists Berraute, De Los Reyes, Suarez-Paz, & Zanetti - Award-Winning Argentine musicians and masters of tango styles, Festival Ensembles and ORQUESTA TIPICA and other special showcases.
